Sprouted Brown GABA Rice
GABA, more scientifically known as gamma amino butyric acid, is an amino acid found in plant products—including brown rice—that is an integral part of the human brain and nervous system. In addition to inhibiting overexcitement and relieving stress and anxiety, GABA can reduce muscle tension and increase the release of Human Growth Hormone, which aids in fat reduction and muscle growth. It also may strengthen bones and maintain blood sugar levels, thus assisting weight control.
In order to increase the levels of GABA, Village Harvest soaks our brown rice for 20 hours in 100°F water to cause grains to bud. This germinating or “sprouting” activates enzymes that produce three to five times the levels of this potent amino acid in conventional brown or white rice. Since water is absorbed while soaking, GABA rice cooks faster than other varieties. It has a flavor that is a cross between white and brown rice and a slightly chewy texture.
