Granny’s Cooking’s Back in Style

We have so many choices a trip down the grocery aisle can sometimes be dizzying. Sure, we can go for the boxes that look prettiest or the flavors we like best, but sometimes it’s difficult to decipher the healthy options from other choices that masquerade as healthy, but are really full of junk.

It’s tricky business these days. Sure there are some prepared foods with high nutritional standards and quality ingredients, but many just use buzz words that make you want to buy them. You know the ones: “Made with whole grains”, “Low in fat”, “Sugar free”, etc. The question is, if these products were so healthy would they really need buzz words? Chances are if they are truly good for you, you would just know it. How? Because these foods look, smell and taste like foods your grandmother would have recognized.

In other words fruits, vegetables, whole grains, meats, cheese are in. Chips, bars, power beverages and other processed foods are questionable. Anything that has ingredients that that granny couldn’t pronounce is out of the question. In fact, you don’t really have to read ingredient labels. Just search them for words like hydrogenated shortening, high fructose syrup, preservatives and colorings and make your decision based on what you find.

But let’s face it, even if your cart’s full of healthy foods, you can’t chow down ‘til the cows come home and expect healthy results. Check out nana’s china and you’ll see that her portions were, um, quaint compared to those served in restaurants these days. Remember serving the right quantities of these whole foods is also important. What’s great is that pure, whole foods are naturally more flavorful and satisfying than their overly-processed counterparts. That means you’ll enjoy them more and probably eat less.
